The Media lab visit on 6/29

Before going to Frontiers in service at Columbus, I visited Media lab at MIT on 6/29.

At the Media lab, the following demos are presented:
  • Tangible Media
  • Viral Spaces
  •  Cognitive Machines
  •  Human Dynamics
  •  New Media Medicine

Tangible Media is a long term research project to visualize invisible information such as sound, light, complex design data. Viral spaces is going to trial using google map to show demand information without exposing privacy information. Cognitive machines is started to study how children learn language by taking videos in a house. It is applied to business space and process design for Bank of America. This project developed techniques of automatic recognition of human flow (customer or business flow), which could be applied to service design widely. Human Dynamics is to learn team performance by studying interactions among the team. The founding of the project is interesting, such as more interaction, more performance, etc… could be a tool to assess service research productivity with site people.
New media medicine includes a lot of interesting ideas, but the challenges of these projects are not technology, but social adaptability and development. The Media lab needs a new way to build social technologies, not only focusing on technologies alone. The Media lab started business development week inviting sponsor companies to discuss new ideas of projects, and internal collaboration possibilities. That will make more issue based research project effective.
